Avonmouth - Bristol
The Co-operative Group's new multi temperature composite distribution centre at Avonmouth, Bristol, was completed in September 2012, after build commenced in August 2011. The site went ‘live’ in October 2012, and it is planned that during May 2013 Avonmouth will be fully operational, employing c. 900 staff.
The 435sq. ft CDC occupies a 33 acre site and will serve 492 Co-operative stores in the South West, South Wales and the Lower Midlands, handling on average c. 1.3 million cases per week
The new site, which has been built on land close to the M49, M5 and Almondsbury interchange, which links to the M4, will consolidate the current volume from two existing distribution centres at Chelston and Portbury.
The state-of –the art facility incorporates the highest standards of efficiency such as Combined Heat & Power (CHP), movement detection lighting, load shedding, power factor correction, roof lights & rainwater harvesting. Such measures have contributed in achieving an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating for the site. Alex Green, Programme Manager for Network Development adds that this ‘…will help to support the Groups commitment to reduce energy usage and improve sustainability’.
At the recent opening of the new site, Steve Murrells, Chief Executive Food Retail said:
‘The opening of our Avonmouth distribution centre marks a key milestone on a journey that began back in 2004 to overhaul our distribution network and enable the business to service stores and customers better than ever before.
We are working harder than ever before to delight our customers by providing an experience that’s the best it can be in stores. There are a number of elements that contribute to creating a great shopping experience. One of the most is availability – ensuring a customer in store, can find everything that they went to the store for. The efficiency of our logistics network is crucial to ensuring stores have good availability of products. So being another step closer to the completion of our new network is very exciting and will make a real difference for customers.”
