The use of double decker trailers has made a significant impact on the CRL trunking network, with 71 currently in operation. These are all moving deck trailers built by Gray & Adams, providing flexibility of loading, productivity gains, and keep our workforce at a safe working height. In total, £5.5m has been invested in double deckers to improve our network capability, reducing miles travelled and helping to reduce our carbon footprint.

Future investments include the acquisition of a further 100 Scania and Daf tractor units in early 2008, and 15 new Volvo refrigerated rigid vehicles, A further £2.5m is being invested in 30 new Schmitz trailers, which are fitted with the latest generation Carrier Vector refrigeration units and heavy duty Ratcliffe tail lifts for reliability.

In order to provide an effective service to the Isle of Man, CRL have recently invested in 4 bespoke Double Deck refrigerated trailers. Built by Gray & Adams; these fixed deck trailers are specially designed to match both the ferry restrictions and the movement restrictions on the island. They are fitted with the latest Carrier Vector refrigeration units, which are not only extremely powerful for this type of application, but also offer excellent fuel economy and reliability.

In response to the complexity of the carbon footprinting debate, The Co-operative Group are taking part in a project with the Carbon Trust to help develop a standard method to calculate the carbon footprint of retail products and services. CRL Primary, by the smart planning of routes and use of resources is working within The Co-operative framework to reduce carbon emissions and to support nationally-sourced food initiatives by the collection and distribution of, for example, Welsh lamb and Scottish Aberdeen Angus beef.
